Most of the time, asphalt is added from a dump truck into the hopper of the paver, from the hopper to the auger, and finally, to front of the screed. It is important to note that it’s recommended to use a material transfer unit instead of a dump truck as a paver machine should operate at a consistent speed.
Dump trucks may contact the asphalt paver machine and cause changes in speed. A material transfer unit allows for constant speed, thus ensuring a consistent supply of material. This makes for a greater stockpile of material in front of the screed with the result of a smoother and even mat of asphalt.
A decent paver for laying asphalt should allow for a smooth surface behind the screed. This is affected by multiple variables such as the angle, weight, vibration, head, and force of the screed itself.
